I Finally Tried the Most Hyped Foundation and Primers On the Internet | The Ordinary | Is It Worth the Hype? The Ordinary Coverage Foundation The Ordinary Serum Foundation The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer High-Spreadability Fluid Primer
After reading countless posts on The Ordinary skincare and makeup, I finally caved and made an order from Deciem.com. If you don't know anything about The Ordinary, it is a brand that makes products with the simplest ingredients, and it's extremely affordable. I was a little behind and didn't look into purchasing these until weeks after people started reviewing them. I went back and forth deciding on shades, and of course the one I thought would fit me the best was out of stock. I signed up for restock updates, and checked their website daily for it to come back. After three weeks or so, it finally came back in stock and instantly purchased them! I ordered them directly from Deciem.com, and for free shipping over $25, and the items arrived in less than a week. I picked up the Cover Foundation ($6.90), Serum Foundation ($6.70), High-Adherence Silicone Primer ($4.90) and High-Spreadability Fluid Primer ($7.90). Keep reading to find out if these items are truly worth the hype!

Shade Range/ Packaging

Before I talk about this specific foundation, I want to talk about the shade range and how magically I matched myself perfectly! Besides for this being extremely affordable, they have a large shade range with different undertones, so there should be a shade out there for everyone. I am using the shade 1.1N and I have so happy with the way it matches!

I also love the packaging of all these products. The foundations come in a plastic bottle with a matte black pump, which looks high-end, but it's also practical. The one thing that surprised me with the foundation is that the bottle felt super light, almost like the bottle came with no product. Both foundations come with 1 fl oz of product, which is the same as other foundations, like Maybelline Fit Me.

The Ordinary Coverage Foundation

Starting off with the foundation I liked the best (spoiler), the Coverage Foundation is a nice lightweight foundation that offers medium to full-coverage. It's a semi-matte finish, and I found it easy to apply with a sponge. It didn't feel thick or greasy, and I didn't notice any scent. I found that 1- 1 1/2 pumps was enough for my to cover my entire face. As for wear, I have oily skin and with my normal routine, I found this lasted well throughout the day. I did get oily at 5-6 hours and needed to blot, but the foundation didn't break up on the skin. For $6, I am extremely happy with this foundation and will continue to use it on a daily basis. I also love this for the summer because it has SPF 15!

The Ordinary Serum Foundation

The next foundation I tried is the Serum Foundation, and this is a light to medium coverage foundation. I found this to be extremely liquidy and needed to be dispensed with caution to make sure it doesn't fall on the floor. The bottle recommends to shake before use, and it almost sounds like the entire bottle is filled with water. Once applied to the skin, I found this looked streaky with a brush, and is best applied with a sponge. It gave a dewy finish, and felt super light and skin-like on the skin. To be honest, this did not work for my oily skin. With powder, I found this broke up on my face after a couple of hours and did not keep my skin matte. However, for $6, those with dry skin would love because because it's a beautiful lightweight foundation that offers light coverage.

The Ordinary High-Adherence Silicone Primer

Moving on to primers! The first one I tried was the High-Adherence Silicone Primer, and this is a matte, yet hydrating, blurring primer that helps your makeup stay on for longer. It comes in a sleek squeeze tube, which makes it easy to control the amount of product that comes out. This is a thicker white cream that blends nicely on the face. I find it did a good job at mattifying my skin, but it felt slightly tacky on the skin. Because it felt tacky, I felt like my makeup looked patchy and didn't apply evenly.

If you've ever tried the Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector, I find this to be extremely similar. The Becca primer is meant to be patted into the skin, not rubbed, which I think is the case with the High-Adherence Silicone Primer. In the end, I was not impressed with the High-Adherence Silicone Primer because my makeup looked patchy, didn't keep me matte, and overall I couldn't get it to work. ButI think some people, especially those who like the Becca Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector will love this, and it's an extremely affordable dupe!

The Ordinary High-Spreadability Fluid Primer

The second primer I tried was the High-Spreadability Fluid Primer, and this comes in a glass bottle with a dropper, and this is meant to extend the spreadability of your foundation so you use less product. This is a clear serum that leaves a silicone feel to the skin, and does a nice job at blurring pores and imperfections. I was much happier with this primer because I felt like it created a nice base for my makeup and helped extend the wear of my foundation. Also, I agree with the claims that you use less foundation because this primer helps create a nice smooth and even base.

Are They Worth the Hype?

In short, yes! I think you just need to find which products work best for your skin type. In the end I loved 2/4 products- which isn't so bad! For affordable makeup and skin care products, I think all of these products are great. Just for my oily skin, I felt that the Coverage Foundation and High-Spreadability Fluid Primer worked the best for my skin. The Serum Foundation is a beautiful foundation and I'm upset it didn't work, but I think it will work much better for someone with dry skin. The High-Adherence Silicone Primer I'm still unsure which skin type would like this the best, since it is thicker, it might not work for dry skin. But those with oily skin, may enjoy this a lot more than I did. I do want to play with it more, and maybe just using it in areas where I get the most oily (like my skin and forehead).

Overall, I am impressed with the price and packaging of The Ordinary products, and definitely want to try more! Please leave your blog post links/recommendations in the comments for me to check out!

  3. I actually found the serum foundation worked better for my skin than the coverage one, but I don't think either have that good longevity! I must give the coverage one another go though as it has been a while. I love the spreadability primer though, it works so well!

  4. I matched myself really well online, too! Personally I prefer the Serum foundation but that's probably because I have dry skin. I will have to add the primer to my next order! :)

  10. I want to try the coverage foundation, which I'm hoping they will stock my shade soon. I have used the Serum foundation and found that suited my combination/dry skin type which did give my skin a nice dewy finish. In regards to the primers, I was the opposite and preferred the high-adherence silicone primer, which surprised me. These are super affordable and I just love this brand overall. Thank you for sharing your review. x

  12. Oh no, I'm so sad that the Serum Foundation didn't work for you! I love that one and it works pretty well with my skin, though I don't have oily skin which may be why our experiences were different. I'm planning to try the Fluid Primer next! Thanks for sharing your reviews :)
